The Role
The civil/structural engineer at the port plays a pivotal role in designing, analysing, and overseeing projects from concept through to installation. The engineer will be part of a specialised Port Civil Engineering team, which is part of the ports multidiscipline Engineering group.

Responsibilities

Civil/Structural Design and Analysis:

  • Develop and execute civil/structural designs for port facilities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Conduct structural analysis using analytical techniques and software tools to assess load-bearing capacities and integrity of new and existing structures.

Site Assessments and Inspections:

  • Perform on-site assessments to evaluate the condition of port structures, identifying potential issues and proposing corrective actions.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure adherence to design specifications and safety protocols.

Project Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, mechanical engineers, and project managers, to integrate civil/structural engineering components seamlessly.
  • Provide technical input during project planning, contributing to the development of comprehensive engineering solutions.

Construction Guidance:

  • Offer technical guidance to construction teams, addressing queries and ensuring the proper implementation of engineering designs
  • Collaborate with contractors to resolve construction-related challenges and optimize project timelines.

Feasibility Studies:

  • Conduct feasibility studies for proposed civil engineering projects, evaluating cost estimates, potential risks, and benefits.
  • Provide recommendations based on feasibility assessments to support decision-making processes.

Compliance and Regulations:

  • Stay updated on relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations, ensuring all engineering activities align with legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with regulatory authorities to obtain necessary permits and approvals for construction projects.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay informed about emerging trends and technologies in civil and structural engineering, integrating innovative practices into project designs.
  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Communication:

  • Effectively communicate complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, and internal teams to address concerns, provide updates, and ensure project alignment with expectations.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil / Structural Engineering with MICE / MIStructE working towards chartered status

  • Full UK Driving Licence

  • Ability to manage your workload and supervise others concurrently

  • Fully conversant with Civil/Structural CAD/Analysis software tools

  • Fully conversant with developing first principle Civil/Structural hand calculations.

  • Fully conversant with developing, reviewing and approving technical drawings

  • A proactive approach, with the ability to manage multiple requests simultaneously and effectively

  • Strong organisational, forward-planning and stakeholder management skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail and interpersonal skills
