How to Prepare for a Video Interview
Since covid, interviews have become a standard part of the hiring process. Whether you’re interviewing for your first graduate role or you next leadership position, being able to present yourself confidently on screen is crucial. At Jackson Hogg, we help candidates prepare for every stage of the hiring journey. In this blog, we'll share our expert advice on how to prepare for a video interview and how to make a long lasting impression.
What is a video interview?
A video interview takes place digitally. You and the interviewer conduct the interview by using a video conference software and this is usually an initial interview stage so that the hiring manager can get a base understanding of your skills and you as a person to see if you’re the right fit for their organisation. Video interviews are used in 86% of hiring processes globally, they save recruitment teams an average of 24% in costs compared to traditional in-person interviews. This trends is fuelled by flexible work options and a growing remote workforce.
Test your Technology Beforehand
Nothing derails a video interview faster than technical diculties. Before your interview, check your internet connection, test your webcam and microphone, ensure your device is fully charged or plugged in, and download or update any required video conferencing software (e.g., Zoom or Teams). Although you can test everything and be fully prepared, technology can randomly fail or disconnect, just make sure to stay calm and fix the issue as soon as you can. We recommend that you log in 20 minutes early to check everything is working perfectly before the interviewer joins.
Choose the Right Location
Plan well in advance where you’re going to conduct the interview; use a quiet location, make sure your room is tidy and use a clean simple background so that the recruiter focuses on you. Avoid applying any filters or backgrounds. Think about lighting because the interviewer needs to be able to see you. To ensure you don’t get a shadow either use a natural light from a window or put a lamp in front of the camera. Close any software on your computer that might play any background noise and make sure nobody interrupts you from within your household. A calm, professional setting helps you and the interviewer stay focused.
Dress Professionally
Even though you’re at home, first impressions still matter - this means dressing appropriately. You should wear the same outfit you would have chosen for a face-to-face meeting with the employer. Think about how your clothes will look on screen and avoid busy patterns and stripes that could clash with the camera. Our top tip is dress fully, not just from the waist up, you never know if you might need to stand up!
Use Positive Body Language
It's best to avoid slouching, moving too much or touching your face. Employers will be looking for you to make good eye contact, smile, listen and take an interest in what they’re saying. To help you do this, your camera should be at eye level and you should look into it rather than the screen. If you’re nervous it can be easy to rush what you’re saying but remember that the employers wants to hear your answers. Speak clearly and be careful not to interrupt as this is more easily done with the slight delay over the internet.
Prepare your Answers & Questions
Just like an in-person interview, preparation is key. Review common interview questions for your role and prepare thoroughly. Also, have a few questions ready to ask your interviewer - it shows enthusiasm and genuine interest in the role. Asking thoughtful questions could set you apart from other candidates.
Video interviews require just as much if not more preparation than face-to-face interviews. By testing your technology, creating a professional setting, practicing your answers and presenting confidently, you’ll put yourself in the best position to succeed. At Jackson Hogg, we are here to support candidates every step of the way, from CV advice to video interview tips.
