    Top 5 Common Interview Mistakes

Job interviews can be very stressful, whether you’re applying for a graduate role or a senior leadership position, avoiding common interview mistakes is key to landing the job. This is your chance to show that you’re the best candidate for the role so you wan’t to avoid mistakes. In this blog we’re going to cover the top five common interview mistakes that we see, whilst sharing simple, actionable tips to help you avoid them.

    Lack of Preparation

One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is walking into an interview with no prior preparation. Employers want to see that you have taken time to understand their company, culture and the role which you’re applying for. A top tip is to practice answers to common questions but don't memorise a script as authenticity matters. Try to make answers seem natural and don’t recite your answers word-for-word.

Talking too much or not Enough

Make sure to find the right balance when communicating. Talking too much can dilute your message, while brief responses may leave interviewers unsure of your skills. Taking part in mock interviews can help give you confidence but ensure that you deliver the right message when answering questions. We recommend quality over quantity - focus on the impact of your words. Employers understand that nerves play a part in the process, so if you’re mind goes blank, politely ask for a couple seconds to gather your thoughts or ask to come back to the question once you’ve had time to think.

    Dressing Inappropriately

What to wear depends on the job you’re going for but being well presented is a must so choose your outfit carefully. Take time to understand the companies policies and this should give you a key understanding on what to wear during the interview. Personal grooming is highly important - dirty fingernails, unclean hair and creased clothes will never impress an interviewer.

    Negative talk about Previous Employers

This gives the wrong impression of you and it makes the interviewer question what you’d say about them in similar circumstances. No matter the reason for you leaving a previous job, always be diplomatic as it shows emotional intelligence and maturity. You don’t want potential employers to think of you as disloyal or complaining. The best way to avoid this is to stay positive and professional, focus on what you have learned and highlight specific skills and experiences and show how they prepared you for your next role, and always redirect negativity into constructive insights.

Ignoring the Importance of Body Language

Many professionals underestimate the importance of good body language during interviews, non-verbal communication is just as important as verbal communication. Poor eye contact, crossed arms or fidgeting can signal nervousness or disinterest to the interviewer. Good body language during an interview may be making natural eye contact and sitting up straight, offering a confident handshake and smiling.
