Business Development Director – Defense & Government (U.S.)
Overview
An emerging technology company is seeking a commercially driven Business Development Director to expand its presence across U.S. defense and federal markets. This role is designed for a results-oriented dealmaker who can operate comfortably across both early-stage strategy and high-stakes contract execution.
You will play a key role in converting opportunity into revenue, combining entrepreneurial drive with the credibility required to engage senior government stakeholders.
Role Purpose
This position is accountable for delivering new business growth across defense and government customers. Rather than focusing solely on pipeline generation, you will take ownership of opportunities through the full acquisition lifecycle—from early engagement and shaping requirements through to successful contract award.
You will act as a key link between customers, partners, and internal teams to ensure strong commercial outcomes and alignment with market needs.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead and manage opportunities end-to-end, from initial identification through to proposal, negotiation, and contract award
- Identify and develop new growth areas across defense and federal agencies, building a sustainable pipeline
- Establish and manage relationships with key government stakeholders, prime contractors, and strategic partners
- Contribute to and execute go-to-market strategies aligned with defense priorities
- Translate customer requirements and procurement signals into clear internal guidance for product and engineering teams
Essential Experience & Capabilities
- At least 5 years of professional experience, with a strong focus on U.S. defense and government markets
- Proven success independently leading and securing complex defense deals
- Experience working in fast-paced, high-growth or startup environments
- Based in the United States with the ability to engage directly with federal stakeholders
Desirable Background
- Experience in maritime, naval, or autonomous systems environments
- Background in scaling defense technology organisations
- Experience in senior individual contributor or leadership roles with responsibility for capture, partnerships, and growth
- Evidence of long-term contribution and progression within previous roles
